Junior Software Engineer

August 4th, 2016
SEATTLE, WA
FORMIDABLE
FULL-TIME
The Future Senior Software Engineer is not an expert developer yet, but you will be. You want to take a crack at something big, and we want to buy into the ground floor of your stellar talent. That’s why we want to hire you now.
Formidable is looking for aspiring developers who may not have a traditional software development background. We’re eager to take a chance on smart, motivated people with a proven ability to get functional websites to clients. This role provides on-the-job training doing real work for real clients with coworkers who are actively pushing the boundaries of the modern open-source web.
Maybe you’re already putting together sites with WordPress and jQuery. Maybe you’re exploring the modern JavaScript stack—tools like Node, React, and Backbone. Either way, you’re ready to take on bigger projects with higher coding requirements, and we’re ready to give them to you.
At Formidable, you’ll build bleeding-edge web apps at scale. You’ll work across the full stack, from server-side APIs to client-side UI. You’ll be involved in the development process from brainstorming all the way through to production. Above all, you’ll level up in your craft: work with powerful technologies, get frequent code reviews from your friendly veteran colleagues, and learn from continuing-education programs. Soon, we hope, you’ll be a senior engineer who runs projects, leads a team, and mentors aspiring developers who are where you are today.
How will we know you have potential to grow in this role? You already have completed projects to your name. You care about what we care about: clean code, sensible architecture, and readability over cleverness. And you’re OK with being uncomfortable, admitting when you don’t know something, and working with others to get better. Software engineering is difficult, and we’ll expect you to learn quickly and meet our high standards.
Still sound good? Let’s talk.
What You’ll Do
• Join a Formidable team as an engineer
• Gather requirements
• Write clean, readable code, mostly Javascript
• Write tests
• Expand your full-stack development knowledge
▾ Backbone
▾ React
▾ Node
• Collaborate, give and receive feedback, and grow
What You Have
• Portfolio of completed projects—websites or apps
• Drive to learn and grow
• Front-end experience:
▾ DOM manipulation
▾ CSS3 & CSS preprocessors
• Understanding of engineering for the web: client/server architecture, REST, etc.
• Experience gathering requirements & interfacing with clients
Extra Credit
• JavaScript MV* frameworks (e.g. Backbone)
• Familiarity with standard design patterns, data structures, and algorithms
• iOS development experience
• CS Background
Who We Are
Formidable is a privately-held, bootstrapped firm based in Fremont, WA. Developing complete web apps, embedding experts in clients’ teams, leading technology-specific training—we tailor our offerings to our customers’ needs, be they startups or Fortune 500s. We’re pushing the bleeding edge of the modern web by advancing the open-source software we use, teaching and learning new technologies, and pursuing opportunities and growth.
Formidable is committed to hiring the best people for the job, regardless of race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.
This position is in Seattle, WA. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Learning Machines. How is it done?

When: Wed, Jun 8th 4pm-5:15pm

Where: BE 3178

Who: Blake Freeman, Computer Science Student & Transhumanist

The contemporary method for the development of sophisticated programs that deal with large sets of data is to turn the task over to a learning agent. A learning agent is built upon an algorithm that can “perceive” its environment and act to achieve a goal. Often this is a computational goal. In this talk Blake Freeman will present an overview of how that is accomplished.
